The 'Ayni Ruway' Centre for Women's and Family Development is a non-profit organisation based in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Ayni Ruway was established in 1995 and since then has been working on different projects in the area of Human Rights of encarcerated people and their families. These projects are developed both inside and outside the prisons, with the aim of benefitting those people who will gain or have recently gained their freedom.
As part of one of these projects, Ayni Ruway offers work and educational programs inside and outside the penitentiaries. This project includes the management and provision of access to educational programs for imprisoned people, their spouses and families through education centres at the primary and secondary levels.
One of the largest problems facing the rehabilitation of prisoners in the six prisons with which Ayni Ruway works is illiteracy. In order to have a successful reintegration of former prisoners into society outside the penitentiaries, reading and writing skills are essential. These are skills that many people in the United States and Europe take for granted, but people here often do not have the opportunity to finish school. Faced with extreme poverty, families find it more urgent that children work to bring in an immediate income rather than build skills to assist them in finding a good job later in life.
This enormous challenge to the progress of former prisoners as they regain their freedom is now highlighted in the new Bolivian constitution, which states that all citizens must finish secondary school (the equivalent of U.S. high school). In an effort to assist prisoners in their reintegration as well as to comply with the new laws, Ayni Ruway is currently working with teachers from the Simon Rodriguez Education Centre in Cochabamba to teach primary through secondary grade classes in each of the six penitentiaries with which we work.
As part of this project, and with the collaboration of the Simon Rodriguez Education Centre, we are aiming to donate one copy of each book necessary in primary and secondary education to each of the prisons in order to facilitate learning and assist in the education of the inmates. There are four basic subjects represented in the books we want to donate - Mathematics, Language, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Given that there are seven grades total in primary and secondary level education, and that there are six penitentiaries involved in this project, we are aiming to buy a total of 168 books. Each book costs slightly more than 30 Bolivianos (about US$4.40 or UK£2.90) and therefore the project total will be $750.
In my efforts to assist Ayni Ruway during my internship, I am trying to raise the $750 necessary to buy books for this project. I am therefore writing to request donations, however great or small, from my family and friends around the world. I realise that given the current international economic crisis, you might not be able to give as much as you would like, however as we all know EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS. With your help I hope to raise the funds to buy the school books that will make a massive difference in the futures of people, many of whom were driven to crime by the sheer fact that they had no other means of making a living. Reading and writing skills, and a basic education, will allow them to start a new life when they regain their freedom, something I know all of them want to do.

El centro de Desarrollo para la Mujer y la Familia “Ayni Ruway” es una Organización No Gubernamental sin fines de lucro con sede en la ciudad de Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Como uno de estos proyectos, Ayni Ruway brinda capacitación laboral dentro y fuera de los recintos penitenciarios. Paralelamente se gestionan el acceso para los ex-internos/as, para su cónyuge o hijos en centros educativos del nivel primario, secundario o de formación técnica especializada.
El analfabetismo es uno de los problemas al que se enfrenta el estado boliviano. Este problema lógicamente también se refleja en los recintos penitenciarios del país y principalmente en los penales del Departamento de Cochabamba. Es en este entendido que la educación se constituye en un pilar determinante para una verdadera rehabilitación de los internos en las seis penitenciarias del departamento de Cochabamba; por esta razón se ha impulsado a la unidad educativa Simon Rodríguez inicie sus actividades educativas en los penales de Cochabamba conjuntamente con los labores que realiza Ayni Ruway.
La exitosa reintegración de los encarcelados en la sociedad solo puede realizarse cuando el interno haya logrado adquirir determinadas habilidades que solo pueden ser desarrolladas cuando el interno sabe leer y escribir. Estas son técnicas que muchas personas en los Estados Unidos y Europa desaprovechan, pero aquí en muchos casos la gente de bajos recursos no tiene la oportunidad de terminar el colegio. Las familias que enfrentan pobreza extrema creen que es mas urgente mandar a los niños a trabajar para ganar un salario inmediato que tener una educación que los ayudará a encontrar un buen trabajo más tarde.
Este enorme desafío al progreso de la gente que estuvo encarcelada está destacado en la nueva constitución boliviana, la cual dice que cada ciudadano tiene que terminar la secundaria. En un esfuerzo para ayudar a los encarcelados en su reintegración y a cumplir con la ley, Ayni Ruway está trabajando con profesores en Cochabamba para proporcionar clases de nivel primaria y secundaria en cada uno de los penales con los cuales trabaja.
Como parte de este proyecto, colaborando con los responsables administrativos de la unidad educativa Simon Rodriguez nos gustaría donar a cada uno de los penales una copia de los libros necesarios en la educación primaria y secundaria para facilitar el aprendizaje y ayudar en el alfabetismo y la educación de los internos. Hay cuatro temas básicos representados en los libros que queremos donar – Matemáticas, Lenguaje, Ciencias Naturales y Ciencias Sociales. Considerando que existen siete niveles en total de educación primaria y secundaria, y que hay seis penitenciarios involucrados en este proyecto, tenemos como meta comprar 168 libros. Cada libro tiene un costo de alrededor de 30 Bolivianos (US$4.40 o GB£2.90) así que el total para este proyecto sería de US$750.
En mi esfuerzo para ayudar a Ayni Ruway durante mi pasantía, estoy tratando de recaudar los US$750 necesarios para comprar libros para este proyecto. Les escribo para solicitar donaciones, ya sean grandes o pequeñas, de familiares y amigos alrededor del mundo. Me doy cuenta de que la actual crisis económica global no nos permite dar tanto como nos gustaría, sin embargo como todos lo saben HASTA LO MAS MINIMO CUENTA. Con su ayuda espero recaudar los fondos para comprar los libros que van a hacer una gran diferencia en el futuro de personas, las cuales muchas se sentían forzadas a cometer un crimen por el simple hecho de que no tenían otra manera de ganarse la vida. Técnicas de leer y escribir, y una educación básica, les permitirán empezar su vida de nuevo cuando salgan, algo que todos los internos quieren hacer… Se los puedo asegurar.
